Fourier analysis

MRI scanners

An MRI never photographs you. It records how tissue resonates at different frequencies, and the picture the doctor reads is reconstructed from those frequencies by a Fourier transform. No transform, no image.

Topology

Finding shape in noisy data

Topology studies what stays true when you stretch and bend something. Applied to scan and sensor data, it finds structure — loops, gaps, clusters — that survives the noise, which is how patterns get spotted that a straight average would flatten away.

Bayes’ theorem

Reading a medical test

A test is 99% accurate and you tested positive for a rare disease. Most people conclude they are ill. Bayes shows that when the disease is rare enough, the same result is far more likely to be a false alarm — the arithmetic disagrees with the intuition.
